In 1876, a motion was passed calling for consideration to be given to the appointment of a general secretary.
The matter was discussed for a number of years but it was not until 1886 that a full-time official was appointed (Alexander Mackay, headmaster of Torryburn School) and, in 1910, Samuel Murray was appointed as the first general secretary.
